What Are Rivets?

Rivets are permanent fasteners that consist of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. They are installed by deforming the tail end to create a second head, permanently clamping two or more materials together. Unlike bolts and screws, rivets cannot be easily removed without destroying the rivet, making them ideal for permanent joints.

Blind Rivets (Pop Rivets)

Blind rivets (commonly called pop rivets) can be installed from one side of the work, making them essential when access is only available from one side. They consist of a hollow rivet body and a mandrel that pulls through and deforms the rivet body. Once set, the mandrel snaps off, leaving a secure permanent joint. Blind rivets are widely used in African construction for sheet metal fabrication and structural connections where only one-sided access is available.

Structural Rivets

Structural rivets are designed for load-bearing connections in structural applications. They have higher shear and tensile strength than standard blind rivets. Monel structural rivets offer excellent corrosion resistance for marine and coastal applications. In African infrastructure, structural rivets are used in bridge construction, roofing systems, and pre-engineered metal buildings.

Common Applications in Africa

Rivets are used throughout African industry: sheet metal fabrication—HVAC ductwork, enclosures, and equipment housings; roofing—securing metal roofing sheets in standing seam systems; transportation—trailer and truck body construction; water tanks—sealing and assembling water storage tanks; and telecommunications—mounting antenna equipment and shelters.

Installation Best Practices

For proper rivet installation: drill the correct hole size (slightly larger than the rivet diameter); clean the hole of debris before insertion; insert the rivet fully until the head seats against the material; position the rivet tool correctly on the mandrel; squeeze the tool handles fully until the mandrel snaps; and verify the installed rivet head is fully formed and secure.

What are Technical Guide and how are they used?

Technical Guide are essential components in construction and manufacturing. Proper selection depends on load requirements, environmental conditions, and material compatibility.

How do I choose the right fastener for my project?

Consider the material being fastened, load requirements, environmental exposure, and applicable standards. Consult with a professional if unsure about specifications.

What materials are available for these fasteners?

Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and specialty alloys. Each offers different strength, corrosion resistance, and cost characteristics.

Do you offer custom manufacturing?
